Match Report - British Police 2013

The Sportsground Galway - 6th of November 2013

Result:- Ireland Police 19 – 10 British Police

The Ireland Police Team maintained their strong run of results with an excellent victory against a strong British Police Team who were seeking revenge following the Irish Team’s victory in the 2012 Fixture in the Millenium Stadium.

The game started at a ferocious pace with the visitors having the benefit of a strong breeze and the home team carrying well to gain territory. The British Team took the lead on 15 minutes with a penalty and came very close to scoring the game’s first try with some despairing last-ditch tackling needed. The momentum then shifted with the Irish team taking a Half-Time lead through 2 penalties by Ger Brady, who finished the game with a 100% return from placed balls.

The 2nd half saw the high intensity maintained by both teams but the big turning point came after 12 minutes when the British Captain, Ben Cole, was sin-binned for killing the ball deep in their own 22. Brady kicked the resulting penalty and the Irish reaped rich dividends with the extra man with a further penalty and the game’s opening try.

A great catch at a restart by Dave Houston saw the ball being moved to Damien Broughall who broke clear and made 60 metres before passing to the supporting Brian Campbell to touch down. Brady added the touch-line conversion and the 13 points conceded during the sin bin were too much for the British team to recover from.

The last few minutes of the game saw the British attacking from all angles and a try by their winger, Toby Handley, made for a slightly uncomfortable finish but the Irish boys held on for the win that puts them 3 – 2 ahead in the series.

This was an excellent performance by all 23 of the Irish players with serious impact coming from the replacement players and this sets the squad up nicely for their trip to Paris in March.
